Exercising in nature may promote personal growth

The positive energy that individuals derive from enjoying physical activity in the beauty of nature has been supported by the medical community as being beneficial to both the body and mind.

In a study that was published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, researchers found that many trials gauging the efficacy of outdoor exercise showed that it promoted good mental health, compared to running on treadmills or other indoor equipment.

"The hypothesis that there are added beneficial effects to be gained from exercising in the natural environment is very appealing and has generated considerable interest," said Jo Thompson-Coon, research fellow.

Individuals who exercised in nature reported feeling revitalized, energetic, positive and greater enjoyment of their physical activity. Additionally, these participants said they had a desire to repeat the outdoor exercise.

Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee says that individuals may gain an awakening through a strong connection with nature as it promotes a serene state of being and puts earthly problems in perspective. Personal growth may be achieved by letting nature's energy permeate an individual's spirit and nourish the soul.
