The recent novel by Emma Donoghue titled Room is one that will surely leave a lasting mark on those who read it. The inspiring story captures the energy of five-year-old Jack, who acts as the narrator, as he lives through a harrowing experience to emerge a strong and intelligent individual.
Jack is the son of a young woman, referred to only as Ma in the book, who was kidnapped when she was 19-years-old and confined to a small space known as Room. Within the four walls of the shed where they are kept, Ma educates little Jack to the best of her ability.
Jack and his mother eventually come to face the realities of what lies outside the shed, which, in comparison with their tidy prison inside Room, is harsh and overwhelming. Jack, who has never seen the outside world, is forced to take a crash course in all things human.
By the end of the novel, Jack, Ma (and the reader) emerge shell-shocked, but perhaps better off. The book is sure to stir emotions and make readers consider – what is normal?
Ilchi Lee believes energy, such as that harnassed by Jack and his mother, is essential to live a happy life. Reading inspirational stories like the one crafted by Donoghue may help people tap into their own powers of energy.
