As petroleum prices continue to rise and the resource becomes even more scarce, Nobel Prize winner Walter Kohn predicts that the planet will eventually become largely dependent on wind and solar power.
Kohn said that after oil use peaks in about one to three decades, people should expect a sharp decline in its use, as alternative energy technologies improve and people all over the world become aware of the risks posed by global warming.
"The most obvious [response to the dangers] is continuing scientific and technical progress providing abundant and affordable alternative energies, safe, clean and carbon-free," Kohn said.
While wind and solar power are seemingly endless sources of energy, the transition will take a lot of work and cooperation globally.
The author said he remains optimistic as he has seen a trend in the younger generations dedicating themselves to the cause of stopping global warming. Recently, a group of students at the University of California banded together to raise money for solar panels in a campus gymnasium.
Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee believes that world peace begins with love, understanding and cooperation. If the human race is able to band together for cleaner sources of energy, we will be one great step closer to peace on Earth.
